Now that you know the basics about why and when to file, let’s talk about the "how" and, it’s not as scary as it sounds.
Free Tax Software You Can Use
If you have a simple return (no big investments or complicated business income), there are some great free tools you can use:
Wealthsimple Tax: Super clean and donation-based, you can even pay $0 if you want.
TurboTax Free: Easy, popular, and walks you through each step.
H&R Block Free: Big brand name, solid free version for simple returns.
CloudTax: CRA-certified and good for basic needs.
GenuTax: If you prefer a download instead of filing directly online.
Tip: Free software usually works if you have employment income, tuition credits, simple investments, or no income at all. If things get complicated (like self-employment, rental properties, or foreign income), you might want to invest in a paid version or get professional help.
What You’ll Need
Before you sit down to file, gather:
T4 slips (for work income)
T5 slips (for investment income)
T2202 slips (for students, this shows your eligible tuition amounts)
Receipts for anything you want to claim (like medical expenses, rent, or moving costs)
Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) you’ll use it a lot here!
Perks You Should Know About
There are a few tax benefits just for being here:
GST/HST Credit: Free money back to help with the sales taxes you pay.
Canada Child Benefit (CCB): Monthly payments to help with raising kids.
Climate Action Incentive: If you're in certain provinces, you might get a nice refund just for living and breathing.
Tuition Tax Credit (for students): A big one! You can reduce your taxes or carry forward unused amounts to future years.
You’ll usually apply for these benefits when you file your taxes for the first time.
