Canada is home to some of the finest schools in the world, and this represents a large attraction for people wishing to receive a quality education. High-ranking schools such as McGill University, University of Toronto, and University of Alberta, among others, welcome a large population of newcomers annually. Among these newcomers are those who wish to make Canada their home after graduating.

The Government of Canada has put programs in place to facilitate this transition for eligible international students wishing to become permanent residents. Some of these pathways are specific to provinces, while others are federal.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Several provinces have programs aimed at making the transition to permanent residence a smooth experience. These programs target recent graduates with qualifications and skills that meet the industry needs in their respective provinces.

Eligibility Criteria for PNPs:

  1. Graduate from a University or College in the Province:  The applicant must have successfully completed their studies at an eligible institution in the province.

  2. Valid Postgraduate Work Permit: The applicant must possess a valid postgraduate work permit, allowing them to work in Canada after their studies.

  3. Legal Status in Canada: The applicant must hold legal status in Canada during the application process.

  4. English Language Proficiency Test: The applicant must have taken and passed an English language proficiency test (IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core) within the last year.

  5. Job Offer in the Province: The applicant must have a job offer from an employer within the province for a position in the preferred National Occupational Classification (NOC) category.

Steps to Apply for Permanent Residence Through PNP

Applying for Permanent Residence through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) can be done via either the Express Entry or Non-Express Entry pathways.

Express Entry Pathway:

  • Update your Express Entry profile to show your nomination from the province/territory.

  • Wait to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence, and then apply.

Non-Express Entry Pathway:
